LUXURY WRITING INSTRUMENTS – A HISTORIC PASSION

Writers, artists and politicians have appreciated writing instruments for centuries. Since their inception, quality writing instruments have been the tools of artists and academics. The evolution of writing instruments can be attributed to them: from wooden sticks in the early days of mankind, to goose feathers and modern ballpoint pens. The ancient Egyptians used rush grass, a type of grass with brush-like ends, to write. Ink, or rather its predecessor, was made from charcoal. In the Middle East reed pens were often used. The first pen resembling what we are used to today appeared around the 4th century AD. Goose feathers with a sharpened tip were used to create the feather quill. This father of fountain pens prevailed over centuries as the principle writing instrument – and can even be found nowadays with metal nibs. The first metal tipped quill was developed in Aachen in 1748 by then mayor Johannes Janssen. However, it would take another 100 years before this innovation became widespread - this was mainly due to industrialization. With the mass emergence of factories, the production of steel nibs was significantly simplified and accelerated. In Germany, the industrial production of steel nibs began around the year 1830. In 1842, the company Heintze & Blanckertz founded the first German steel nib factory – at that time, the usage of the previously popular quills had already been seized in schools.

WRITING CULTURE WITH FEATHERS AND QUILLS

The invention of the modern fountain pen with a capillary feed was in 1884 by Lewis Edson Waterman. His tweaks and adjustments to the common quill laid the foundation of the revolutionary development of fountain pens for the next century. Waterman added a breather hole into the centre of the nib. This allowed the writer to more precisely control the ink flow when writing. He also introduced a new type of feed which made use of the capillary effect. This also aided the ink in flowing evenly onto the paper in a consistent line without leaving blots and smudges. Thanks to this change, the fountain pen remained the undisputed number one choice among writing instruments. Many consider the fountain pen as the most elegant of all writing tools and an unparalleled way to put your thoughts on paper. This is the case for everyday writers as well as avid penmen. Fountain pens simply embody a certain level of class and elegance that is unmatched in the world of writing. At the end of the 1900s, the first alternative to the reliable fountain pen emerged. However, at first it was not much of a competitor: The ballpoint pen was expensive, even messier than a quill and hardly available to consumers since it was only produced in small quantities. This only changed in the 1940s when the journalist László József Bíró made substantial improvements to the initial designs of the ballpoint pen and shaped the ballpoint pen as we know it today. Bíró’s principle of rolling an oil-based ink paste onto the paper with a small metal ball is still widely used today and its versatile usability has made the ballpoint ubiquitous throughout the world.

Another popular writing tool dates back to antiquity and is still a favourite among artists and experts today: the pencil. In ancient times lead sticks were inserted into hollowed-out wood pieces and used for writing. Today pencils no longer contain any lead and use a graphite-clay mixture instead. The principle has however remained the same. Additionally, modern production techniques have enabled the graphite core to be housed in a number of different casings resulting in the invention of mechanical pencils. And just like their fellow writing tools, high-quality mechanical pencils often consist of precious metals like silver or gold, making them both a writing tool as well as a status symbol.

THEN AS NOW: THE EPITOME OF PENMANSHIP

Today, the Hemingway fountain pen goes for prices beyond 2,000 Euro – and the price is still rising. However, if you intend on keeping a fountain pen as an investment you should not write with it. Only unused luxurious writing instruments retain their value.
